Q: We were recently told that it is illegal to park in front of our curb-side mailboxes. I was wondering if this is true and if so, what are the fines for this? If this is true, everyone on this street has a problem because there is only parking on one side.
A: It is not illegal, Chief Klug says, to park in front of mailboxes, “but it might be inconvenient for the mail carriers.”
Postal regulation state that the approach to the box and the box must be clear of all obstacles, including snow and vehicles, or the carrier doesn't have to dismount to deliver your mail. Carriers usually do deliver because most people don't care if the carrier is inconvenienced or not.
